Even as two incidents of firing in the busy markets at Ranjit Avenue District Shopping Complex and Majitha Road rocked the city on Tuesday,the police claimed to have busted major gangs of robbers with the arrest of 16 people with illegal arms and ammunition.
While there was panic at the Ranjit Avenue area where two groups of youth fired for six times and then fled the area,the Civil Lines police arrested one Rajinder Singh for firing in the air.
Meanwhile,the 12 robbers arrested included Mandeep Singh alias Raju,Jaswant Singh alias Bunty,Gurwant Singh alias Laddi,Kulwinder Kaur,Sukhwinder Singh,Jujhar Singh,Davinder Singh alias Minta,Baldev Singh alias Bunty,Sajan,Sunny and Deepak Kumar. The police have recovered three pistols,cartridges and 24 gold earrings from their possession. A case under Sections 399,402,379,411 of the IPC and 25,54,59 of the Arms Act was registered against them,said Commissioner of Police R P Mittal.
In another case,the police arrested three alleged car thieves Bikramjit Singh,Dilbagh Singh and Ranjit Singh and recovered one 32 bore desi psitol,two live cartridges,100 gm of toxic powder and a Skoda car from them.
The police also recovered a Hero Honda,a pistol and two live cartridges alive from one Karamjit Singh,who has been arrested.
