In A suspected case of honour killing in a Panipat village, the police have arrested a man on charges of killing one Vikas, who was reportedly in love with his daughter. The deceased belonged to the Jat community.

The action comes after the village mahapanchayat on Monday served an ultimatum on the police,a 48-hour deadline,to bring those who killed Vikas, son of junior engineer Karambh Singh of the state irrigation department,to book.

Rohtak Range IGP V Kamraj visited the family of the deceased and assured them of quick action in the case. A senior police officer said accused Ravinder Gupta’s interrogation was underway and more arrests would follow.

After Vikas “disappeared” on March 20,and a complaint of kidnapping was lodged on March 23 with the Panipat police. His body was recovered from Jawaharlal Nehru Canal, close to Rohtak,on April 1. He was brutally stabbed, said sources in the police.

A meeting of mahapanchayat, which was slated to be held on Wednesday, was cancelled soon after Gupta’s arrest. Gupta runs a few educational institutions in Delhi and Haryana.
