The accused have been booked under sections 379 (theft) and 114 (abettor present when crime committed) of the Indian Penal Code as well as the Prohibition Act. Fifteen people, including a police constable, a Gram Rakshak Dal jawan and a traffic brigade jawan, were booked by the Piplod police station in Dahod on Thursday for alleged theft and under the Prohibition Act after 23 of the 44 boxes containing Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), seized during a raid by the State Monitoring Cell, went missing from the police station located in Devgadh Baria taluka.
While 10 of the 15 people were arrested on Wednesday, Deputy SP Limkheda Bishakha Jain said the police have launched a manhunt for five others. They included an unidentified auto driver, a car driver and a helper at a shop in the Piplod market.
According to the police, in a raid on April 20, the State Monitoring Cell had seized 44 boxes of IMFL.
The boxes were kept in the compound of the Piplod police station after being confiscated.
A day later, 23 boxes were found missing and the Dahod superintendent of police had ordered an inquiry in the matter.
The probe had revealed that 15 people were involved in the theft, including police constable Shailesh Gopalbhai as well as a a Gram Rakshak Dal jawan and a traffic brigade jawan. Some bottles of the IMFL were also recovered from the houses of two accused, Satish Ganpat Patel from Devgadh Baria and Prakash Mahesh Koli, in Singwad.
