Unboxing Bengaluru Habba, an annual citywide festival, kicked off on Friday covering a range of events spanning arts, culture, literature, heritage, technology, music and much more. It started on a refreshing note at Cubbon Park, where Karnataka’s textile heritage is showcased, followed by heritage walks.

A curtain-raiser for the festival was attended by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and several others at Doddapete Square in Chickpet on Thursday. It was a celebration of the beginnings of Bengaluru and the 400th anniversary of the city’s foundation was re-enacted with the historic Udbhava Legend attributed to the visionary Kempe Gowda.

In this ceremony, eight bullocks pulled four carts from Doddapete Square in four directions, marking the foundation of the city’s main streets. The city’s first-ever ceremonial re-enactment aimed to honour Kempe Gowda’s contributions and the cultural roots that have shaped Bengaluru into a vibrant metropolis. Furthermore, attendees and visitors at Doddapete Square were entertained with the traditional Janapada Kunita folk dances, showcasing the state’s cultural diversity through engaging performances.

The first day was also marked by a musical performance at Vyoma Artspace and studio theatre featuring an evening of dance and music performance by students and teachers of the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts.

In addition, UBH also ushered in the Christmas season with The Bangalore Men & Cappella Bangalore, two of the finest choirs in the country, who performed Carols in the City. The traditional Christmas concert also included some rockin’ jingle bells, puddings and figs to mark a sparkling Christmas season.

The first edition of UBH promises to be a grand affair with participation from 50-plus organisations. Scheduled to end on December 11, the 11-day festival has over 500 events planned across 45 locations in Bengaluru. The “festivals of festivals” will showcase events in 12 categories.
