According to the data shared by the Union environment ministry, 112 people have died due to elephant attacks in Karnataka from January 2019 to April 2023.

Out of the total estimated elephant population of 6,395 in Karnataka, 161 were sighted within private lands such as coffee estates, according to the 2023 Karnataka elephant census report.

“These private lands may serve as additional habitats for elephants, but they may also pose challenges for conservation and human-wildlife coexistence. Conservation efforts should consider the needs of elephants in both types of habitats to ensure their long-term survival and coexistence with human communities,” the census report said.
