Titagarh Rail Systems begins production of train sets for BMRCL’s yellow line project in Bengaluru
The contract agreement between BMRCL and CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd, signed in December 2019, encountered challenges, which led to delays in meeting the original deadlines.

The Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), an Indian rolling stock manufacturer, has commenced the production of trainsets as a part of a contract with China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) for the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (BMRCL) Phase 2 Yellow Line project.
According to a statement by the TRSL, the contract agreement between BMRCL and CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd, signed in December 2019, encountered challenges, which led to delays in meeting the original deadlines.
To address these delays in the rolling stock supply, the CRRC sought additional time and subsequently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with TRSL. Under this MoU, the TRSL will manufacture the train sets at its state-of-the-art facility, the TRSL said.
Under the agreement with the BMRCL, the TRSL is responsible for producing 34 of the 36 train sets needed for the Yellow Line at its advanced manufacturing facility.
Only two trainsets, comprising 12 coaches, will be manufactured in China. To meet the specific requirements of the project, Titagarh has established a dedicated stainless steel production line at its facility. The production for the same began on May 18 this year and the first train set is slated for delivery in August 2024.
Meanwhile, the BMRCL on Thursday commenced the mainline testing on the RV Road and Bommasandra stretch. BMRCL officials stated that the trial run will include various tests including traction break test, full loaded sand bang test, signalling test and oscillation trial from Research Design and Standard Organization (RDSO).
The 18.82 km Metro line connecting RV Road to Bommasandra (Reach 5) is being constructed under Phase II of the Bangalore Metro Rail Project at a cost of Rs 5,744 crore. This Metro stretch aims to enhance the connectivity from south Bengaluru to the IT hub in Electronic City to reduce traffic congestion at Silk Board junction and Hosur Road.
While the two prototype trains consisting of six cars are manufactured by the Chinese based CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd, the rest of the coaches will be manufactured with their domestic partners Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd, as part of Make In India initiative. The Chinese firm won a Rs 1,578 crore contract in 2019 to supply 216 coaches to BMRCL.
