After the heavy rains on Sunday, thundershowers – accompanied by gusty winds and hailstorm – are expected to lash parts of Bengaluru Urban district on Monday evening, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Rainfall is expected in Bengaluru over the next five days, with the forecast projecting a decline in its intensity over the period.
Districts surrounding Bengaluru Urban, such as Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur and Kolar are also likely to see a similar weather pattern till Thursday.
On Sunday, the average rainfall recorded in the city was around 35 mm from 3 pm to 6 pm, with Guttahalli reporting the heaviest rainfall of 66 mm during the period. Widespread rain was recorded in several regions of Bengaluru city with localities such as Kottigepalya (54 mm), Nandini Layout (48 mm), KR Puram (36.5 mm) and Vidyaranyapura (32.5 mm) seeing heavy showers.
As per IMD’s daily report, in the 24-hour period since 8.30 am on May 21 (Sunday), 34.4 mm rainfall was recorded at Bengaluru International Airport, 32.2 mm at Bengaluru HAL Airport and 33.4 in Bengaluru city. The forecast has also indicated a generally cloudy sky, with a likelihood of light to moderate rain.
According to a report by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Bengaluru has received excess pre-monsoon rainfall since March 1 this year. Compared to an average of 111 mm during the March 1 to May 30 period, Bengaluru has already received 142 mm of rainfall, which is 28 per cent above normal. For the South Interior Karnataka region, the average rainfall recorded this year is 129 mm against a normal of 107 mm, an excess of 20 per cent.
Districts in the North Interior Karnataka region too have received above-normal rainfall during the period, while it has been below-normal in Malnad region and coastal districts of the state.
