Three persons were allegedly assaulted in Bengaluru Wednesday for raising “Jai Shri Ram” slogans, the police said, adding that four men have been arrested in relation to the matter.
The incident took place near Vidyaranyapura at 3.20pm when D Pavan Kumar, Binayaka and Rahul, all in their 20s, were travelling in their car and chanting “Jai Shri Ram” when they were stopped by two men on a motorbike who allegedly abused them and asked them not to raise “Jai Shri Ram” slogans.
One of the them recorded a video of the incident which surfaced on social media. “Jai Shri Ram, no. Only Allahu Akbar,” a person outside the car was heard saying in the video. The video showed Kumar, Binayaka and Rahul getting out of the car and trying to chase the duo who were joined by three others to assault the trio with sticks.
A case has been registered by the Vidyaranyapura police under IPC Sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs); 298 (uttering, words, etc, with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings); 143 (unlawful assembly); 147 (punishment for rioting); 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace); 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means); 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt); 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed), police said.
The police informed that of the four persons arrested, two are minors. A police officer said that all of them were residents of MS Palya.
Investigation has revealed that Farman and Sameer were heading on the bike and it was Farman who questioned and insisted to raise the “Allah Hu Akbar” slogan. He tried to snatch the flag held by one of the victims and two of the victims chased Farman into a nearby lane and Sameer rode the bike. While the victims were returning back to their car, Sameer and Farman came with a few others and assaulted them before fleeing from the spot.
