Thieves decamp with tomatoes worth Rs 2.5 lakh in Karnataka’s Hassan
Tomato prices have experienced a significant rise across the state, with prices in Bengaluru ranging between Rs 101 to 121 per kilogram.

A woman farmer in Karnataka Wednesday alleged that tomatoes worth Rs 2.5 lakh were stolen from her farm. Thieves allegedly decamped with 50-60 bags of tomatoes from the woman farmer’s agricultural field in Goni Somanahalli village under Belur taluk of Karnataka’s Hassan district Tuesday night.
The woman farmer, Dharini, and her family members had grown tomatoes on two acre of land and were planning to transport the yield to the market next week.
Dharini told media persons, “We incurred huge losses in bean harvest and had taken loans to grow tomatoes. We had a good harvest and, incidentally, prices were also high.” She added that besides taking the 50-60 bags of tomatoes, the thieves also destroyed the remaining standing crop.
Based on Dharini’s complaint, a case of theft was lodged at the Halebeedu police station.
A police officer at Halebeedu police station said, “We had heard about the theft of areca nut and other commercial crops but never heard that someone stole tomatoes. This is the first time that such a case has been reported at our police station.”
Notably, tomato prices have experienced a significant rise across the state, with prices in Bengaluru ranging between Rs 101 to 121 per kilogram. The escalation in prices has been attributed to the sudden temperature increase in March and April that resulted in pest attacks on tomato crops, leading to decreased yields and higher market rates.
