A meme war has broken out between the Congress party and BJP in Karnataka with photoshopped images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah snoozing being posted on social media platforms in the last five days.

It all started last Friday after the Karnataka BJP unit started a #SleepingSarkara – sleeping government – campaign to attack the Congress government over its alleged failure to tackle issues faced by the state.

Almost a week later, on Tuesday, Siddaramaiah launched a #WakeUpPM campaign from his X handle, irking the BJP unit.

In the first post, the BJP shared a picture of Siddaramaiah dozing claiming that the mantra of Congress was to “Loot. Ruin. Sleep. Repeat!”.

“Karnataka, under the sleeping regime of Siddaramaiah, has unfortunately become the Titanic of India,” the BJP said, accusing Congress of turning a blind eye when farmers were ending their lives, power cuts were frequent, and severe drought was affecting farmers, among other issues.

“Once a thriving Karnataka has become a night-time lullaby under this #sleepingsarkar. Wake up, Mr CM! Time to put this nightmare to bed!” the post read.

On Tuesday, the Congress responded with Siddaramaiah taking the lead in posting memes of PM Modi. “When the Prime Minister dozes, the nation loses! Narendra Modi is always awake for his personal PR & BJP’s campaign, but is always seen sleeping on issues concerning Karnataka,” the post said.

Reiterating that the BJP government at the Centre has reduced or denied funds to Karnataka, Siddaramaiah said PM Modi’s mantra appeared to be “Ignore. Neglect. Sleep. Repeat!”

“Wake up, Mr Prime Minister,” Siddaramaiah said, adding that it was “time to ensure the rightful share of Karnataka”.

The BJP responded Wednesday morning, asking whether Siddaramaiah was the CM or a meme maker. “The nation is grateful to our Karma Yogi PM, who works 18-20 hrs a day, striving towards the nation’s growth without a day off since 2014 – that’s commitment…. Yet, here you are, working overtime only to create farcical memes. Btw your memes are as purposeless as you are on the CM’s chair,” BJP said.
