A jewellery businessman who was kidnapped for a Rs one crore ransom by a gang of abductors was rescued within six hours of his disappearance by the Bangalore city police following a filmy style chase here on Thursday night. The jewellery businessman Ram Dayal Vaishnav, 35, a resident of Doddanekkundi in east Bangalore, a native of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, and the owner of Suguna Jewelers was kidnapped by four persons in a SUV when he was on his way home after shutting shop around 10 pm on Thursday, the Joint Commissioner of Police for law and order (east) K V Sharath Chandra said. His abductors made an extortion call to his brother Deen Dayal Vaishnav within a few hours of his kidnapping and demanded a Rs 1 crore ransom for the release of his brother. The brother Deen Dayal rushed to the HAL police and filed a complaint. The police suggested that Deen Dayal should buy time for the police to track the suspects by bargaining with the abductors to reduce the ransom amount. The bargaining process saw the abductors drop their ransom demand from Rs 1 crore to Rs10 lakh and to Rs two lakh. Meanwhile the police put in place a rescue plan for the victim and a plan to nab the abductors. The abductors however kept changing the point of delivery of the ransom amount and finally called and instructed Deen Dayal to throw the money from the Avalahalli bridge. Deen Dayal who was accompanied by a police constable in plain clothes did what he was instructed to do by the abductors and informed the police team as well. When the abductors arrived to pick up the money bag dropped from the Avalahalli bridge they were alerted to the presence of police and attempted to flee in their SUV without collecting the ransom money. The police however followed in hot pursuit and the abductors stopped their vehicle at Medahalli near KR Puram and tried to escape by foot. The police managed to nab one of the accused who was later identified as Madhu - a native of Kolar. He was arrested and taken into police custody. Police are attempting to use information provided by the arrested suspect to nab his associates. The jeweller Vaishnav had been living and doing business in Bangalore over the last ten years. He was rescued by a HAL police team headed by inspector Ashwath Narayana from the back of the abandoned SUV around 4 am on Friday, nearly six hours after he was kidnapped.
