Six caught trying to sell Brazilian Real worth Rs 63 lakh in Bangalore

The main persons behind the sale of the currency are yet to be traced.

Six persons carrying a large amount of Brazilian currency and attempting to sell them in Bangalore at a cheap rate have been arrested by the police. The six accused were allegedly attempting to exchange 2.54 lakh Brazilian Reals worth Rs 63.5 lakh at a low exchange rate. The main persons behind the sale of the currency are yet to be traced.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (central division) Sandeep Patil said the police acting on a tip off found the six persons attempting to sell Brazilian currency worth Rs 25 per Real at a rate of Rs 15 per Real near the Hameed Shah Complex in Cubbonpet in central Bangalore. The police conducted a raid based on the tip off regarding the illegal exchange of foreign currency and secured five persons at the spot. The police team also seized 2.54 lakh Real.

The arrested were identified as Karapaiah of Tamil Nadu and five locals identified as Somashekar, Muralidhar, Chandrakanth, Kashi Vishwanath and Soma. Police said Karapaiah and Somashekar were the main accused in the case while the others were agents selling the Brazilian currency.

“The accused claimed ignorance about the source of the currency. Further investigations are on to ascertain the source of the currency and whether it is fake or genuine,” DCP Patil said.
