A day after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s wife B M Parvathi wrote to the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) offering to surrender the 14 controversial alternative sites allotted to her, the MUDA swiftly accepted the request on Tuesday.

MUDA Commissioner Raghunandan A N reportedly issued directions affecting the same. During the day, Raghunandan was learnt to have initiated the process of taking the sites back after Siddaramaiah’s MLC son Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah petitioned the civic body on behalf of his mother.

According to the MUDA, the decision to take back the sites was taken in consultation with legal experts. The additional sub-registrar of the MUDA will take further steps to complete the process.

The 14 sites were allotted to Parvathi after she wrote to the civic body to grant alternate sites in lieu of the land used for the developing layouts. The MUDA had developed layouts on land parcels measuring three acres and 16 guns belonging to her without going for land acquisition.

The alternate sites were allocated in 2021, but a few months ago, there was a controversy when Opposition parties alleged irregularities in the allocation process. Following complaints by activists, Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot sanctioned the prosecution of CM Siddaramaiah. This decision was then challenged in the Karnataka High Court.

However, the high court had allowed an FIR to be registered against the chief minister. Even as the Lokayukta initiated a probe into the complaint, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) also booked Siddaramaiah concerning the alleged irregularities at the MUDA.

After Parvathi announced that she would surrender the sites allotted to her by the MUDA, the Karnataka BJP asked whether a thief becomes innocent as soon as he returns the stolen goods. Siddaramaiah, on the other hand, stated that he respected his wife’s decision and lamented that she had to endure mental harassment due to the political vendetta against him.
