Despite exit polls predicting an edge for Congress in the Karnataka Assembly elections, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said he was confident that the BJP would get an absolute majority.

Responding to media queries at Hubballi, Bommai said exit polls and pre-poll surveys had earlier given around 107 seats to the Congress. This changed after poll results were out as the BJP emerged as the single largest party. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign has been a positive one for the BJP. The youth and women voters have backed the party in large numbers. The BJP is confident of coming to power on its own with an absolute majority,” he said.

On his prospects in Shiggaon constituency, Bommai said a lot of conspiracies and misconceptions were spread against him ahead of the polls but added that despite all that, he would win with a huge margin.

Union minister and Karnataka Election Management Committee convenor Shobha Karandlaje said the exit polls will turn out to be wrong once the results are out. “I am confident that we will form a majority government. This is the report from booth-level BJP workers who were present at polling booths on Wednesday,” she said.

As per the primary reports obtained by the party, Karandlaje said, the BJP was leading in 120-125 seats. The Union minister also mentioned that polling in Bengaluru was below expectations as the party had expected around 60 per cent polling in its constituencies.

“Fearing that residents of the city will go out if polling was held during the weekend, the Election Commission had scheduled it mid-week. Yet, the polling was around 52 per cent,” she said.

Modi’s road show, she said, had helped increase voting percentage. “Whoever participated in the road show, I am confident that they voted for us,” she added.
