Karnataka ex-MLA’s brother Mumthaz Ali kills himself after losing Rs 75 lakh in rival’s ‘sextortion plot’

Police investigating the alleged suicide of former Karnataka MLA Mohiuddin Bava’s brother B M Mumthaz Ali, 52, suspect that he took his life because of sextortion. Extortionists allegedly pocketed Rs 75 lakh from him and were demanding an additional Rs 50 lakh.

Mumthaz Ali, who was active in social work and was the chairman of the Misbah Group of Educational Institutions, was reported missing on October 6. He sent an audio message to his daughter and brother Hydar Ali, detailing the blackmail and indicating his intention to die by suicide. Divers recovered his body from the Phalguni river near Kulur in Mangaluru on Monday. His car was found near the Kulur bridge.

The police have booked Rehamath, Abdul Sattar, Shafi, Sohaib, and Siraj, all residents of Mangaluru, in the extortion case and issued a lookout circular to stop them from leaving the country.

What does the FIR say?

In his complaint, Hydar Ali said his brother Mumthaz Ali had been blackmailed since July, with the accused alleging he had an illicit relationship with Rehamath.

“Mumthaz Ali, who has been in public life for more than 30 years, is known for his service in the education and religious sectors,” Hydar Ali said in the complaint.

He said that Mumthaz Ali had no affair with Rehamath.

According to the complaint, Abdul Sattar, a rival of Mumthaz Ali, conspired with the others to blackmail him. The gang initially extorted Rs 50 lakh and later cashed a Rs 25 lakh cheque. They continued to demand an additional Rs 50 lakh, which Mumthaz Ali informed his family about.

Around 3.30 am on October 6, Mumthaz Ali sent a voice note on WhatsApp to Hydar Ali stating that he was being blackmailed daily and threatened with the release of videos to tarnish his reputation. In the audio message, Mumthaz Ali named all six accused and demanded stern action against them, according to the complaint.

The police have registered a case under sections 308(2) (extortion), 308(5) (extortion by putting in fear of death), 352 (insulting with intent to breach the peace), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 190 (unlawful assembly) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
