In a letter addressed to the Centre, the state government stated that the skit contained derogatory terms against Ambedkar. (Video screengrab of the skit) The Karnataka higher education department has written to the Union Education Ministry seeking withdrawal of Jain University’s deemed to be university status over the controversial Ambedkar skit episode earlier this year.
In February, nine people, including the principal of Jain University CMS Dr Dinesh Nilkant, students were arrested for a skit that allegedly insulted and mocked the reservation system in India and Dr BR Ambedkar. The accused were later granted bail by a sessions court.
In a letter addressed to the Centre, the state government stated that the skit contained derogatory terms against Ambedkar and the words such as “Untouchability”, “Inequality”, “Cast” and “Reservation” were used in a contemptuous manner, creating ‘unrest’ in public.
“The State Government considered the incident seriously and caused inspection thereof and obtained the report. From the report, it became evident that the management of the University was well aware of the script, content and dialogues of the script. In spite of that the management of the University did not prevent the students from performing the said skit,” the letter read.
The state government said that the university administration made “insincere” efforts to rusticate students who were behind the skit. The apparent “maladministration and mismanagement” warrants strong action against the university, it said.
