The Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the state government and the state Election Commission to conduct elections to the Bruhath Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council by May 30 this year.
The court has ordered elections on the basis of the existing delimitation of wards and updated electoral rolls. Justice B V Nagarathna has asked the state government to publish a notification regarding the seats for reserved categories on or before April 13.
“On publication of the reservation structure, the Election Commission should issue a calendar of events aimed at completing the entire electoral process on or before May 30,” the court said.
The existing ward wise reservation system must be continued in the event the state fails to revise the structure by April 13, the court has said.
The Karnataka government had proposed postponing of polls to the council, whose term ends on April 3, in order to facilitate the trifurcation of the city into three separate councils – East, West and Central Bangalore – after a committee headed by former chief secretary B S Patil furnished a report on the trifurcation process.
The high court has, however, suggested that the state government could trifurcate the city in time for the next BBMP election in 2020. The BJP and the JDS have been opposed to the Congress government’s plans to postpone the BBMP polls. A few BJP councilors had approached the High Court asking for orders to the government to conduct the BBMP election on schedule.
