With a high number of online applications from people to avail of the Karnataka government’s schemes, the Cyber Crime Division of Bengaluru police has warned them against unauthorised mobile applications and websites for registration for the Gruha Jyothi scheme.

The warning from the Cyber Crime Division came after it learnt that cybercriminals are attempting to collect the data of applicants through unauthorised apps and fake websites.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) S D Sharanappa said the government has not released any mobile app for the registration process but people can register through the Seva Sindhu portal. Sharanappa also asked people to avoid external links which are shared on social media.

“We have not received any complaints on registration through an external portal but we suspect that some fake portals and applications are doing rounds online. The public needs to be cautious,” he added.

Among the five schemes that the Karnataka government launched, applications for the Gruha Jyothi, which promises up to 200 units of free power for households, are the highest.

As of Sunday, 92,50,157 households registered to avail of the scheme. Of them, 38,01,649 people have registered under the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) limits, which includes Bengaluru, which is the highest.

With technical glitches making it difficult to register for the free electricity scheme, middlemen are offering to help people to register and are collecting extra money.

Recently, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar in a tweet asked people not to fall for the scam as they can apply for the scheme without the help of any middlemen.
