Facing more than 3 crore unpaid traffic violations worth nearly Rs 1,000 crore, the Karnataka government on Saturday announced a limited-time offer: motorists can clear their pending dues at half the penalty.

On the first day (23 August) of the scheme, the Bengaluru city traffic police said nearly 1.5 lakh cases were settled, generating more than Rs 4.18 crore in fines. According to the police, the offer will be valid from August 23 to September 12.

Where can ones pay the fines?

The traffic police in the order said that the payments can be made through Karnataka State Police (KSP) app, BTP ASTraM app introduced by the Bangalore Traffic Division, at the nearest police traffic police stations, and the traffic management centre at the headquarters.

To know the details of the traffic violations, if any, the public can obtain and also can make a payment on Karnataka one or Bangalore one websites.

Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said on Friday: “Our government is committed to promoting road safety, lawful conduct, and public convenience. In this regard, a 50% concession has been announced on all pending traffic e-challans across the state. Citizens are requested to clear their dues and strictly follow traffic rules in the future.”

This is not the first time that the state government has introduced a 50 per cent discount on pending traffic fines. In 2023, when the government announced a similar scheme, more than 20 lakh traffic violation cases were settled and more than Rs 50 crore in fines were collected. A similar discount offered by the Hyderabad Traffic Police in 2022 was also successful in collecting overdue fines.
