The Karnataka unit of Congress will hold a rally on Friday in Mysuru to counter the padayatra being carried out by Opposition coalition partners BJP and JD(S) demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over the alleged irregularities in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

The Mysuru rally will be the culmination of the Janaandolana carried out by the ruling party to counter the Bengaluru-Mysuru march, which the Congress has termed as a “paapayatra by a corrupt BJP-JD(S) alliance”. The Congress rally on Friday will come a day ahead of the final day of the Opposition padayatra in Mysuru on Saturday.

Congress said on Friday it will also release a “chargesheet” against the coalition partners, accusing them of widespread corruption during their rule in the state.

Siddaramaiah, who is stationed in Mysuru for the past few days, on Wednesday oversaw the preparations for the rally. On Thursday, the CM returned to Mysuru after participating in some pre-scheduled events in Bengaluru.

Ahead of the rally, the CM has also attempted to pacify disgruntled Congress MLC B K Hariprasad by holding a meeting with the leader on Wednesday evening. Though he was expected to skip the rally at Mysuru, the MLC – who is also a permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee – is learnt to have agreed to participate in the event. According to sources, Hariprasad had raised a demand to be inducted into the Karnataka Cabinet during the reshuffle.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president D K Shivakumar told the media in Bengaluru that the Opposition has organised the march to target a leader from the backward class community who became the chief minister for the second time in the state.

“Had there been an issue, the padayatra would have held some meaning,” he said, claiming that JD(S) workers had not attended the yatra and there was no public support for the same. He accused the BJP of sourcing workers from other parts of the state to participate in the yatra.
