Karnataka’s Opposition BJP has demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of a 34-year-old sub-inspector in Yadgir city, alleging that he was under pressure to bribe the local Congress MLA and his son in order to ensure that he remained posted at the Town police station.

MLA Chennareddy Patil and his son Pampangowda were booked for abetment of suicide, among other charges, after sub-inspector Parashuram died on Friday. The case is being investigated by the police’s Criminal Investigation Department.

“In order to ensure justice to the family of the victim, a CBI probe should be ordered,” Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka told reporters after meeting members of Parashuram’s family. He alleged that the incident reflected rampant corruption prevalent in every department under the Congress government.

According to Parashuram’s wife Shweta, the MLA and his son had demanded Rs 30 lakh to ensure that he remained posted at the Yadgir Town police station. “This led to my husband’s death while he was at home on Friday afternoon,” she alleged.

Ashoka said that Parashuram was transferred to the Yadgir police station less than a year ago.

Members of Parashuram’s family and Dalit organisations had demanded that Patil and Pampangowda be booked in connection with his death.

Home Minister G Parameshwara said the police had ruled out suicide, adding that the postmortem report would reveal exact cause of the officer’s death.
