Kannada filmmaker Guruprasad’s decomposing body found at rented apartment; wife says he was depressed due to debts
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar took to X to condole Guruprasad’s death.

Notable Kannada filmmaker Guruprasad was found dead at a rented apartment on the northern outskirts of Bengaluru on Sunday.
The 52-year-old director whose birthday was on Saturday is believed to have passed away four days ago. The police have registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) suspecting suicide. His decomposing body was discovered after a foul smell emanated from the flat.
“There was no sign of an intruder, and the door was locked from the inside. His wife mentioned he was facing financial difficulties as he had accumulated significant debt due to his filmmaking ventures, which may have been a contributing factor,” a senior police officer said.
According to the UDR, his wife Sumithra last tried to contact Guruprasad over the phone on October 25 but he did not respond to the calls. On Sunday (November 3), Jayaram, a resident of the apartment in which Guruprasad lived called Sumithra and informed her about the foul smell. Upon breaking open the door, the body was found.
Superintendent of Police (SP) C K Baba informed the media that no suicide note had been found. The body has since been sent for a postmortem examination at a government hospital in Nelamangala.
Guruprasad’s movies were critically acclaimed for communicating social messages through satires. His films like Mata and Eddelu Manjunatha starring Jaggesh are considered classics. Although his later works, Eradane Sala and Director’s Special, did not achieve substantial box-office success, they were well-received on television.
In addition to directing, Guruprasad also acted in small roles in over 10 films and appeared on various Kannada reality TV shows, including ‘Bigg Boss Kannada’. Known for his outspoken nature, he was no stranger to controversy and faced legal issues, including a cheque bounce case filed in January.
Guruprasad has a daughter from his first marriage to Arathi. After his divorce, Guruprasad married Sumithra in 2020 and the couple has a three-year-old girl child. He lived in rented houses on Kanakapura Road, Rajrajeshwari Nagar, and Basaveshwara Nagar. A few months ago, he shifted to an apartment in Madanayakanahalli.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar took to X to condole his death and wrote, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the demise of Mr. Guruprasad, a creative director and a native of Kanakpur.
