File photoA special court for hearing cases involving elected representatives on Monday granted conditional bail to Dr Suraj Revanna, a JD(S) member of Karnataka’s Legislative Council arrested on June 23 in connection with a case of sexual assault filed by a 27-year-old male volunteer of his party.
The special court in Bengaluru granted conditional bail to Suraj Revanna on a personal bond for Rs 2 lakh.
“The petitioner shall furnish his passport to the Court and shall not leave the State without obtaining written permission from the Court. The petitioner shall not in any manner contact the victim directly or indirectly. The petitioner shall appear before the IO (investigating officer) on every second Sunday of the month and mark his attendance between 9 am to 5 pm for a period of six months or till filing of chargesheet, whichever is earlier,” the court said.
The Holenarasipura rural police in Hassan district registered the sexual assault case under Indian Penal Code sections 377 (carnal intercourse against the order of nature), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 506 (intentional insult to provoke breach of the peace). Before lodging the complaint, the JD(S) worker had complained to the state home minister and the police chief.
According to the FIR, the party worker visited Suraj Revanna at a farmhouse in Holenarasipura taluk of Hassan district around 6.15 pm on June 16. The man alleged that the MLC stripped and sexually assaulted him and threatened to kill his family. He also alleged that Suraj Revanna had assured him of a job and help for political growth.
Suraj Revanna and Prajwal Revanna, a former JD(S) MP for Hassan, are the sons of JD(S) MLA H D Revanna and Bhavani Revanna. Their grandfather is former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and Union minister H D Kumaraswamy is their uncle.
