JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy said Monday that the party would consider backing the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) if the situation arose in the coming days. The party has not been invited either to Tuesday’s NDA meeting or to the meeting of the Congress and other like-minded opposition parties being held in Bengaluru on Monday and Tuesday.

Responding to media queries on whether the JD(S) would back the NDA and take part in its meeting, he said there was still time left. “We will see. We are not invited anywhere. Right now, we are concerned about organising our party and raising people’s issues,” he said.

He also attacked the Congress and other parties for not even “considering” the JD(S). “Managers of Mahagathbandhan are under the impression that the JD(S) is finished. Whether they extend us an invitation or not, I am not bothered,” he said.

“Any discussion (on whether he would back the BJP-led NDA or not) is premature. Elections are still eight to nine months away. We will see when the time comes,” the former CM said.

His remarks came at a time when there were talks within Karnataka’s political circles that the JD(S) could ally with the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The JD(S), which has allied with both the BJP and the Congress in the state is said to be warming up to the saffron party following the disastrous results for the two parties in the recently held Assembly elections.

A recent remark by BJP parliamentary board member B S Yediyurappa that “Kumaraswamy and we will fight together” in the future also set tongues wagging.

Kumaraswamy recently dismissed the rumours, saying that such speculations were common in politics. “No such discussions have been held so far and no one has proposed such an alliance with us,” he said last week.
