The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), in partnership with the Electronics City Industrial Township Authority (ELCITA), on Monday launched a new electric bus service connecting Silk Institute Metro station and Electronic City.

According to ELCITA officials, the new free-of-cost service will also feature three daily trips connecting commuters between the East and West phases of Electronic City township area.

The initiative aims to cater to the growing demand from IT employees and other industry employees residing in South Bengaluru seeking last mile connectivity to their workplace in Electronic City. It is also aimed to reduce dependence on private vehicles and encourage a shift toward greener commuting options.

This is not the first time that feeder buses are introduced between the 25-km stretch. ELCITA was already operating four feeder buses from their fleet for employees when the Silk Institute Metro station was operationalised in 2021. The services were also operated on a free-of-cost basis.

According to ELCITA officials, around 150-180 passengers were commuting daily on the stretch in the four feeder buses. However, with the addition of BMTC feeder bus, they are expecting the footfall to rise to around 300 every day.

While ELCTIA buses depart from Silk Institute Metro station at 7.45 am, 8.45 am, 9.10 am and 9.30 am, the BMTC bus departs at 8.15 am. Meanwhile, ELCITA buses depart from Electronic City at 4.45 pm, 5.30 pm, 6 pm and 6.20 pm, while the BMTC feeder bus departs at 5.15 pm.

“We had proposed to BMTC to run revenue services between Silk Institute and Electronic City, given the growing demand. However, the plan did not materialize. Therefore, after much deliberation, we thought of running the BMTC bus on a casual contract basis. We have charted one of their electric buses for over Rs 6 lakh for two months. However, we will discontinue the service once the Yellow Line (RV Road-Bommasandra) Metro operations begin,” said a spokesperson of ELCITA.

The official also stated that the casual contract is agreed for 120 km, including 70 km, for the last mile connectivity and the remaining for the trips within the ELCITA township area. “The BMTC bus service is also operated on a free of cost basis for commuters. Additionally, we have also submitted six feeder routes from Konappana Agrahara and Infosys Metro stations to bridge the last mile connectivity on the Yellow Metro line,” the official added.
