10 killed, 15 injured in road accident in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada
The accident took place in Uttara Kannada district when the victims were on their way to the Kumta market from Savanur to sell vegetables.

At least 10 people were killed and more than 15 sustained injuries after the truck they were travelling in toppled and fell into a 50-metre-deep valley Wednesday morning in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district.
The accident took place near the Gullapur village under the Yellapur taluk, which is part of National Highway 63, when the victims were on their way to the Kumta market from Savanur to sell vegetables.
The deceased are Fayaz (45), Waseem (25), Ijaz (20), Sadique (30), Gulam Hussain (32), Imtiyaz (40), Alfaz (25), Jilani (20), Aslam (24) and Jalal (30).
The police suspect more than 30 people were on the truck, and a majority of them were from Savanur of Haveri district. The police and residents shifted the injured to the nearest hospital.
The victims were attending the weekly fair in Kumta. “The truck toppled probably due to a pothole or losing balance. We are ascertaining the reason behind the accident,” a police officer said.
Amit Singh, Inspector General of Police, Western Ranges, and several other police officers visited the accident spot.
Meanwhile, four people were killed in another road accident in Sindhanur of the state’s Raichur district.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the state government will provide a compensation of Rs 3 lakh each to the families of those who died in two separate accidents in Yellapur in Uttara Kannada district and Sindhanur in Raichur district. Siddaramaiah also said those who were injured in the accident will be treated free of cost.
“Rash driving, speeding, and carelessness are the causes of accidents. I appeal to you to drive carefully and be safe,” he said in a post, loosely translated from Kannada, on X.
