Bengaluru ‘dog meat’ row: Police register FIR against former BJP MP Pratap Simha
A case was lodged against former BJP MP Pratap Simha and others after they protested in front of Basaveshwara Nagar police station, claiming Hindutva activist Puneeth Kerehalli had been tortured in police custody.

The Bengaluru police on Thursday registered a case against former BJP MP Pratap Simha and others for allegedly obstructing police duty while protesting in front of a local police station. The protest was a fallout of an allegation over ‘dog meat’ allegedly being sold in Bengaluru as sheep meat.
Simha, BJP MLA Harish Poonja, and several others had protested in front of the Basaveshwara Nagar police station on Wednesday alleging that self-proclaimed Hindutva activist Puneeth Kerehalli was tortured in police custody.
Kerehalli, an accused in a murder case, was arrested after he created a ruckus at Bengaluru city railway station on July 26 saying that he had intercepted cartons containing dog meat that was to be sold as sheep meat in the city. The consignment belonged to Abdul Razaak, a trader who sourced the meat from Rajasthan.
Following the allegations, the Karnataka health department had collected the 84 parcels and the meat was sent to the ICAR-National Meat Research Institute in Hyderabad. Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Wednesday said that the test results had concluded it was sheep meat and urged people to refrain from spreading rumours.
Following recent media reports alleging the transportation of mutton and other animal meat from Rajasthan to Bengaluru via train, we committed to thoroughly investigating this matter through scientific verification. Though Kerehalli was released on bail on Wednesday, he claimed that he was stripped naked and tortured by the police. Levelling allegations against Chandan Kumar, Assistant Commissioner Of Police, Vijayanagar, Simha said, “He was taken into a room at Cottonpet police station and was made to stand nude. Does the law allow anyone to be stripped? Are there homosexuals in the police department?”
The First Information Report (FIR) has named Kerehalli and Simha as accused.
