(Photo/ TWITTER/@BlrCityPolice) Bengaluru’s newly appointed Police Commissioner B Dayananda said Wednesday that traffic management and cybercrime will be his top priorities. Taking over from outgoing commissioner C H Pratap Reddy, Dayananda expressed his commitment to maintaining the public’s trust in the department and addressing the numerous challenges ahead.
In his first interaction with the media after taking charge, Dayananda said that he will look into whether towing has to be re-introduced in Bengaluru. “We will study the pros and cons of the towing system and submit it to the government to take a call,” he added.
“Traffic management in the city needs to be coordinated with the civic agencies. We will work towards decongesting Bengaluru,” Dayananda said.
He also emphasised the need to strengthen the intelligence wing. “It (intelligence) is the backbone of the department. For better policing, intelligence needs to be an efficient department,” Dayananda said.

With Bengaluru reporting more than 4,000 cyber crimes this year, Dayananda, who has been credited for his tech-savvy work in the past, said, “Cybercrime is definitely a challenge. Some of the small cybercrimes must be handled at the police station level (regular stations). It can reduce the burden of the police personnel who specifically focus on the same. Adequate training needs to be provided, which will be done.”
Dayananda was earlier posted as the superintendent of police in the Bijapur, Belagavi, Chitradurga, Dakshina Kannada and Kolar districts. He is the recipient of the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2011), United Nations Medal for World Peace Keeping service in Kosovo (2003-04) and Chief Ministers Gold Medal (1998-99). On the occasion of Republic Day in 2022, he was awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service.
Besides this policing experience, Dayananda also has experience handling the transport department as he worked as the Karnataka transport and road safety commissioner. He also looked after the affairs of the state Forensic Science Laboratory for two years during which time its reorganisation was taken up. An exclusive cyber forensic lab was also set up and inaugurated.
Dayananda started a police blog in 2005, probably the first of its kind in India while working as SP of the Dakshina Kannada district. For this, he was awarded the ‘E-gov Award for Innovation – 2006’ at an international conference on e-governance held in New Delhi in 2006. Under his guidance, the Bengaluru City Police started using various social media tools to better connect with people.
