Cloudy skies, dip in temperature for Bengaluru this week amid rain forecast for some areas of Karnataka

According to IMD forecast, coastal and southern interior Karnataka may experience isolated heavy rain, while light to moderate showers are expected in other regions.

Cloudy skies and a below-normal temperature are predicted for Bengaluru over this week, even as low-pressure regions over Tamil Nadu and a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal are expected to bring rain to parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka from Wednesday to the weekend, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD weather forecast for Bengaluru over the next 48 hours is “mainly clear sky during the day and partly cloudy towards evening/night”, with maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 36 and 20 degrees Celsius, respectively. Rain is expected in some areas of Karnataka in the coming days, but no significant showers is forecast for Bengaluru.

“Under the influence of wind and trough, isolated heavy rain is likely to occur over the districts of coastal Karnataka and Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu districts of South Interior Karnataka,” says the IMD forecast for the weekend.

“Light to moderate rain/thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places over the remaining districts of south interior Karnataka. Hailstorms and gusty winds with windspeed 40-50 kmph likely to occur at isolated places over districts of south interior Karnataka,” it says.

“Light rain/thundershowers associated with hailstorm and gusty winds with wind speed 50-60 kmph likely to occur at isolated places Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag Haveri, Bidar, Kalburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts of north interior Karnataka,” it adds.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are projected to be lower than normal this week in many parts of the state. The forecast predicts maximum temperatures will be below normal by 1 to 3 degrees in south coastal and south interior Karnataka and by 1 to 5 degrees in north interior Karnataka. The forecast suggests minimum temperatures will be normal to below normal, with a decrease of 1 to 3 degrees in north interior Karnataka and north coastal Karnataka.

On Sunday, Kalaburagi recorded the highest maximum temperature of 40.6 degrees Celsius, and Chamarajanagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 14.7 degrees Celsius for the state. In Bengaluru, the highest temperature of 37.6 degrees Celsius was recorded in R R Nagar, and the lowest temperature of 18.50 degrees Celsius was recorded in Yelahanka.

Bengaluru typically receives more rain in April than the first three months of the year, with as many as four mean rainy days compared to 1.1 in March, 0.3 in February and 0.2 in January. According to data for the last two decades, the mean rainfall in Bengaluru in April is 61.7 mm compared to 14.7 mm for March.

The mean daily maximum temperature for Bengaluru in April is 34.1 degrees Celsius, and the mean daily minimum temperature is 22.1 compared to 33.4 degrees Celsius and 20.2 degrees Celsius in March. According to IMDA data, April has generally been the warmest month in Bengaluru over the last two decades.
