Bengaluru Stampede News Live Updates: Lone IPS officer, team battled crowd as chaos unfolded at Chinnaswamy stadium

When the chaos broke out at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru at around 4 pm on Wednesday, as more than 5,000 Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans surged towards the entry gates to see the IPL 2025 winners, Saidulu Adavath, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), and his two subordinates were among the few law enforcement officers present at the venue.

With the crowd swelling during a parallel felicitation event for the players at the nearby Vidhana Soudha, which Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar attended, Gates 2, 2A, 6, 7, 16, 17, 18, and 21 at the stadium turned into bottlenecks. At Gate 17, a lone security guard struggled to manage the rapidly growing crowd. When some people forced their way in, there was overwhelming pressure on the gate, causing a crush that led to a stampede that killed 11 people.

DCP Adavath, who arrived late due to traffic, immediately grabbed a lathi and charged into the crowd, risking his safety to regain control, according to his subordinates. After several attempts, he managed to close the gate from inside. Read

Bengaluru Stampede News Live Updates: Why police chief B Dayananda, 4 others were suspended over RCB fan deaths

The failure of the top brass of the Bengaluru police to clearly communicate the denial of permission for a Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory parade in the city on June 4 has been cited as the reason for the Karnataka government to suspend five police officers.

The RCB victory parade after the team’s IPL win was advertised on social media as an open event without paid tickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium and saw over 2 lakh fans turning out for the event, resulting in 11 deaths in a stampede as the surging crowd tried to rush into a stadium with a maximum capacity of 35,000.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday night announced the suspension of three IPS officers – Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Vikash Kumar Vikash, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekar H Tekkannavar – as well as Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cubbon Park), C Balakrishna, and Cubbon Park Police Inspector A K Girish over the stadium tragedy.

Though the CEO of RCB informed Dayananda on June 3 about holding the victory parade and celebrations on June 4, “the office of Police Commissioner failed to give written reply to the organizers, rejecting the permission on the grounds of lack of time to prepare for such a huge event”, the government’s June 5 suspension order says. Bengaluru Stampede News Live Updates: Sack Shivakumar from Cabinet, says Kumaraswamy

While RCB officials are to be arrested over the stampede as per Karnataka Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah's statement, here's what's unfolding in political circles.

Holding Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar responsible for the stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru that killed 11 people, Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy Thursday demanded that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sack Shivakumar from the Cabinet.

Kumaraswamy alleged that the ‘insensitive’ attitude of Shivakumar was on display after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) arrived at Bengaluru Airport following their win in the Indian Premier League, during the felicitation at Vidhana Soudha and at the stadium. “He was craving publicity even when people were dying,” he told reporters in Delhi.

He said that Shivakumar acted as a ‘rowdy’ during the incident. “What was the necessity to hold the (felicitation) event at the grand stairs of Vidhana Soudha? The entire state government made it their family event. It was a show of dadagiri by the deputy CM. Even after knowing that people had died, he participated in the event held inside the stadium,” Kumaraswamy alleged.

BJP state president B Y Vijayendra said that even as TV channels were reporting the deaths, the deputy chief minister was seen kissing the cup at Chinnaswamy Stadium. “What was the necessity of organising celebrations in front of Vidhana Soudha when an event was already planned at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government should come clean on whether the decision to celebrate at Vidhana Soudha was taken by the deputy CM or by the CM, and when that decision was made,” he said.

Bengaluru Stampede News Live Updates: Never a believer of a road show, says Gautam Gambhir

India's head coach Gautam Gambhir criticised everyone involved in organising Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations and said "I was never a believer of having a road show. Even in 2007, I was not in favour of that. Have it in a closed door or in a stadium. I hope nothing like this happens in the future."

Gambhir didn't wish to comment on who was responsible or whether the nature of fandom had changed over the years. "We need to be responsible citizens, in every aspect, of whether being a franchise. If we we were not ready to hold a road show, shouldn't have done that. You can't lose 11 people."

Kumar’s family shifted to Bengaluru 22 years ago. A native of Tumakuru, Kumar stayed with his parents in Yelahanka.

“The police called me and asked me to come to Bowring Hospital. I did not have the courage to see my son’s dead body,” Devaraj said. “He went to the event with two of his friends. His body was taken to his village on Thursday for the final rites.

Chinmayi Shetty, 19, was not an avid cricket fan, but decided to join her classmates as they made their way to the Chinnaswamy stadium to join the RCB celebrations. An engineering student who also studied Yakshagana, Chinmayi was a resident of Doddakallasandra and hailed from Mangaluru.

“She called me over the phone at about 1.30 pm and said that she was heading to the stadium. She did not have a craze for cricket, but went there with her classmates. Seventeen-year-old Shivalingu, who hailed from Yadgir, was in Bengaluru to receive his transfer certificate. After collecting his documents, he decided to visit the Chinnaswamy stadium.

“I was watching TV and was blaming the public, wondering why they needed to go to the stadium and Vidhana Soudha in such big numbers. I was unaware that my son was also there,” Shivalingu’s father, Honnappa, who works as a labourer in Honigeri village in Yadgir district, said. “By evening, we received the call that Shivalingu was no more,” he added.
