Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee blamed negligence on part of Railways for the incident. The government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to each of the family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the critically injured patient.
Since the stampede, the Army had constructed a bridge on the northern end of the station, worth Rs 6 crore. In July this year, the Western Railway had constructed another FoB that connects Parel station to the western line.
Witnesses said the stampede happened after fans found the gates to the Estádio 11 de Novembro stadium shut after the match. When police opened the gates, fans rushed out and some were trampled under police horses.
The incident took place around 3 am when the aspirants tried to rush into BMP Ground through the Police Lines gate to take part in a run, on the fifth day of the recruitment drive, Superintendent of Police M S Dhillon said.
