Solid waste management in the city will soon be managed entirely by the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited, a government-owned company under the BBMP. (Representational Image/Express Archives) The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) could soon start levying a fee for the door-to-door collection of solid waste in the Karnataka capital, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar hinted on Tuesday.
“It (levying fees) is part of the solid waste management rules. Accountability has to be fixed,” Shivakumar, who is also the Bengaluru development minister, said in reply to queries raised at a news conference.
BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath told The Indian Express that the proposal to collect a user fee was before the government. “We will start collecting once the government okays the proposal,” he said.
Solid waste management in the city will soon be managed entirely by the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited, a government-owned company under the BBMP.
Established in 2021, the company had sent a proposal to the government to charge a user fee for the collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste in the city. According to the proposal, the company would levy Rs 100 from residential properties and Rs 500 from commercial properties.
Shivakumar further said the BBMP would not further extend the one-time settlement scheme for property taxes introduced in February. The civic body has extended from May 1 to July 31 the deadline for the scheme that allows property tax defaulters to clear their dues with a 50 per cent reduction in penalties.
