Two sisters, both engineering students, allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves with the same sari at their house in Hongasandra in south Bengaluru late on Monday night, police said.
The women, M Tejaswini (22) and her sister M Ranjitha (20), were upset because their parents did not approve of their relationships, police said. Tejaswini was in the final year and Ranjitha in the second year at a private engineering college in Channasandra.
According to the police, the women’s father, Malleshappa, a provision store owner, had decided to get Tejaswini married and start looking for a groom for Ranjitha too. On Monday, he discussed this with his daughters, who told him they were already in relationships.

At this, Malleshappa expressed his disappointment and they had a long argument over the matter, the police said. The family went to bed close to midnight, but Malleshappa woke up around 3.30 am and went to his daughters’ room to speak to them. He found both the women hanging with a sari in their room. The sisters were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival, the police said.
Malleshappa then informed the Madiwala police, who registered a case of unnatural death. A suicide note has been recovered from the women’s bedroom, officers said.
“We found a suicide note at the scene of crime. It did not blame anyone for the sisters’ suicide. It said they were sorry for being a disappointment to their father and family and hoped for forgiveness. No specific reason was mentioned for their extreme step,” MB Boralingaiah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South- East division) said.
