A consumer court in Bengaluru has fined a matrimony portal Rs 60,000 for not finding a potential bride for a man. Vijaya Kumar K S, a resident of M S Nagar in Bengaluru, was searching for a potential bride for his son Balaji. He came across the Dilmil Matrimony portal, which has an office in Kalyan Nagar.

On March 17, Vijaya Kumar approached it with the necessary documents and photos of his son. Dilmil Matrimony asked him to pay Rs 30,000 as a fee to find the potential bride. Vijaya Kumar paid the money on the same day. Dilmil Matrimony orally also assured him to find a potential bride for Balaji within 45 days.

Dilmil Matrimony was unable to find a suitable bride for Balaji, leading Vijaya Kumar to visit their office multiple times. On several occasions, he was asked to wait, resulting in delays. On April 30, Vijaya Kumar went to the Dilmil office and requested a refund of his money. However, the staff members allegedly refused his request and verbally abused him during his visit, using offensive language.

On May 9, Vijaya Kumar issued a legal notice, but Dilmil failed to respond. After the case hearing, the court, in an order on October 28, said, “The complainant did not get a single profile to choose a suitable match for his son, and even when the complainant visited the office of OP (Dilmil), they could not satisfy him or return the amount to the complainant.”

Ramachandra M S, president of the commission, said in the order, ” The commission has no hesitation to hold that there is a clear deficiency rendered by the OP during the course of service to the complainant and that the OP has indulged in unfair trade practices, for which the OP is held liable to refund the amount along with other reliefs granted in the complaint.”

The court ordered a refund of Rs 30,000 collected as a fee, Rs 20,000 for services deficiency, Rs 5,000 for mental agony, and Rs 5,000 for litigation.
