Bangalore NGO under scanner for failing to send back 15 women missing since 2011

Case has been filed against New Dawn Rehabilitation Trust in North Bangalore by state Women and Child Welfare department.

A Bangalore NGO has come under police scrutiny for its failure to send back 15 women from the Karnataka State Home for Women who were sent for skill training four years ago. A criminal case has been filed against the New Dawn Rehabilitation Trust located in North Bangalore by the state Women and Child Welfare Department.

The New Dawn Rehabilitation Trust is operated by a woman Ruksana Hassan. A case against the NGO was first registered at the Hebbal police station and was later transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigations. The Hebbal police said the case was registered based on a complaint filed by officials from the Women and Child Welfare department. The CID has been asked by the state Home Ministry to expedite the probe and submit its report at the earliest.

According to the complaint 15 women from minority communities disappeared from the rehabilitation centre in 2011. One of the women was allegedly found dead under mysterious circumstances. According to sources in the Women and Child Department the women were sent to a rehabilitation centre and one of them died within few days.

A confidential report by the department has stated that Ruksana Hassan had signed an agreement with the department to provide skill training to them for a period of six months. The agreement stated that the women after completion of their training would return to the rehabilitation home.

Last year the disappearance of these women had hit the headlines after the state Women and Child Welfare minister Umashree dragged the name of the former State Minorities Commission Chairman Anwar Manippadi’s name in the controversy.

Manipaddi however, threatened to file a defamation case against the minister for her allegations.
