A Vadodara resident from Gotri area has filed an FIR against officers of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s Encroachment department for assault and criminal intimidation. Shobhit Nagarkar, a businessman from Gotri, has accused officials of the VMC’s encroachment department of physically assaulting him at the premises of a supermarket on Friday, during a drive to evict street vendors.

Nagarkar, who was accompanied by his wife and 18-month-old daughter, has also alleged that the officers took away the couple’s shopping bags after assaulting him.

The incident was captured in the security cameras of the supermarket. The footage shows Shobhit’s wife holding their 18-month-old daughter in the parking lot, where about 10 officers armed with sticks chase and assault Shobhit from the car parking area.

In his complaint, Shobhit has alleged that the VMC officials thrashed him on the suspicion that he was filming their video.

“I had just stepped out of the super market after making our monthly grocery purchase. We saw the VMC encroachment officers vacating street vendors from the pavements forcibly. Since my car was parked there, I asked my wife to wait in the parking area while I went to see if our car had been damaged by their batons. My cellphone was in my hand and they thought I was filming a video of them chasing out vendors. Without even attempting a dialogue to find facts, they jumped into the premises of the supermarket and assaulted me,” Nagarkar says.

Nagarkar’s complaint is against the VMC’s encroachment department. The Gotri police station has undertaken a probe in the matter. Officers of the police station said they would record the statements of the concerned two officers, who were leading the drive at Akota supermarket on Friday, where Nagarkar was assaulted.

Nagarkar says, “I have been approached for a compromise, but I am unwilling to do so as the VMC officials had no right to assault me.” VMC Encroachment department head Mangesh Jaiswal was unavailable for comment, despite repeated attempts.
