The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) may be busy making tall claims about receiving a national award for performance, but it seems to have ignored the need of a flyover in the city.
Recently, the VMC approved one more rail overbridge to connect Manjalpur with the rest of the city while bypassing the Lalbag crossing. Two more such ongoing projects at Vadsar and Jetalpur have been stalled due to slow work from the Western Railway. Sadly, many of the senior VMC officials from both administration and political wings did not find any difference between a rail overbridge and a flyover.
We have recently secured a green signal from the Centre for the construction of a flyover at Lalbag, said a senior official of the Standing Committee. He was talking about the rail overbridge.
Forget about planning flyovers, there is not even a mention of it in the minutes of any meeting and this shows the seriousness of the administration. There is indeed a requirement of flyovers in the city, but we can give it a serious thought only after we overcome the basic problems and requirements like proper roads and sanitation, said a senior VMC official.
Mayor Balkrishna Shukla admitted that the issue was never discussed in the past. In the past, there was no need, and the same thing has been ascertained by the Indian Road Congress, which mentioned that the city does not require flyovers. However, with the growing number of vehicles on the road,it has now become imperative to give it a serious thought, he said.
The only plan was made long ago to connect the traffic between Manjalpur,Rajmahel road to the station area by building a flyover passing through the Navlakhi compound. The project, however, had to be dropped,as the Gaekwads, who own the land, did not agree to the project.
