VHP workers detained at ‘garba’ venue in Ahmedabad

Twenty-one Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers were briefly taken into preventive custody from a “garba” venue here

Twenty-one Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers were briefly taken into preventive custody from a “garba” venue here, police said on Sunday.

“Police detained 21 VHP workers from a garba venue in Sola area as part of precautionary measures to prevent any communal tension in the city,” Inspector S M Patel of Sola Police Station said.

All of them were later released, he said. According to city-based VHP leader Raju Patel, the outfit’s workers were at the venue to check whether any member of a minority community had been allowed inside to take part in Garba (a traditional Gujarat dance form), organised during the popular Navratri festival. The right-wing outfit has warned against allowing Muslims at garba events, which they said is open only for Hindus.
