A 50-year-old woman, who was grievously injured in an accident at Vadodara city’s Genda Circle three days ago, died on Friday, police said. She and her son were on a two-wheeler, which was hit by an SUV, being driven by an 81-year-old at the time of the accident.
The woman was identified as Bhanu Harijan. Her son Sandeep is currently undergoing treatment at SSG Hospital. While Sandeep was riding the two-wheeler at the time of the accident, she was riding pillion.
Officers at Gorwa police station in Vadodara said that section of culpable homicide will be invoked in the FIR lodged in the case although probe has revealed that the two-wheeler had “jumped a red signal” at the junction, leading to the accident.
Family members of the deceased said that the accused had not extended any help after the accident. Sunil Harijan, another son of the deceased, said: “My mother was on her way to her Circuit House office and my brother was going to drop her when the vehicle (SUV) crashed into their two-wheeler and left them seriously injured… The police are saying that they are investigating the case. The accused did not bother to extend any help… my mother could have been saved. My brother is conscious, but has suffered serious injuries on the limbs.”
The accident was caught in a CCTV camera. The footage showed that the SUV moved forward after the signal turned green, while the two-wheeler sped towards the junction from the left, leading to a crash. The impact was such that the woman landed on the bonnet of the car and was then dragged under the wheels, while her son was flung to the ground, along with the two-wheeler.
On Thursday, officers from Gorwa police station arrested the driver of the SUV, Dwarkadas Ramlakhlani, for alleged rash and negligent driving.
Officers at Gorwa police station, meanwhile, said that a probe has revealed that the victims disregarded the traffic lights and jumped the signal. Police Inspector Kiran Lathiya of Gorwa police station said, “As per the provisions of the law, the accused was granted bail as it was a bailable offence. Now that one of the victims has passed away, we will invoke culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the complaint lodged by the family (of deceased). However, CCTV footage clearly shows that the two-wheeler had jumped the signal and sped towards the junction. It reached the lane of the SUV, which had got a green signal. The crash happened as the two-wheeler did not follow the traffic rules… We will file a summary report in court, accordingly.”
