To streamline its delivery system, the Vadodara Postal Circle is contemplating to have Global Positioning System (GPS) installed in its mail delivery vehicles moving in different parts of the city.

Ahmedabad circle officials had earlier planned to implement the project, and now their Vadodara counterparts have started examining the logistics involved in the project.

“GPS has successfully been used in other services, and realising the importance of the same in postal services,we are now contemplating on the project,” Vadodara Region Postmaster General Lt Colonel D K S Chauhan told The Indian Express. “GPS in our vehicles can help us in tracking the movement of the vehicles, the time they started from one destination to the time they took to reach to another.”

Some states have successfully implemented GPS. “We will soon get in touch with experts in the field to explore the project’s feasibility,” he said.

The plan assumes significance in the wake of stiff competition from private courier companies.

“Every fortnight we have a video conference to discuss the performance of the regions and a lot of stress is given on prompt services,” Chauhan said.
