The Vadodara city police Thursday booked the owner of the Nizampura apartment that MS University law student Rakshit Chaurasiya had rented earlier in March for allegedly subverting the mandatory direction of registering the rent agreement and police verification of tenants.
The Fatehgunj police station has booked Ashwin Raman Narayan, 46, a resident of Talegaon Chinchwad in Maharashtra under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The move comes a week after Chaurasiya crashed a Volkswagen Virtus into three two-wheelers, killing one and injuring seven others on March 13, near Amrapali Complex in Karelibaug in the city. The FIR lodged at Fatehgunj police station by constable Vanrajji Shankarji states that since the current residence of Chaurasiya falls under the jurisdiction of Fatehgunj police station, as per the process, the personnel of Fatehgunj undertook a physical verification of the address and the landlord to ascertain since when Chaurasiya had been living in Vadodara.
“On inquiring, we found the landlord, who introduced himself as Ashwin Raman Narayan, a resident of Talegaon Chinchwad, had rented the flat at Gayatri apartment to Chaurasiya on March 1, 2025 for a monthly rent of Rs 7,500. However, when asked to produce the rent agreement, the flat owner said that he had no agreement to show,” Fatehgunj Police Inspector AM Gadhvi told The Indian Express.
“He had also failed to inform the police station about the tenant to be able to complete the mandatory verification process,” Gadhvi said.
The Fatehgunj police station registered an offence against Narayan under Section 223 of BNS for disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant.
On the other hand, the Karelibaug police station, which is investigating the March 13 incident of the car crash on Thursday recorded statements of five more witnesses in the case.
Karelibaug Police Inspector HM Vyas said, “As part of the investigation, we undertook the exercise to verify Chaurasiya’s current address and nature of residence in Vadodara. It came to light that he had been living without a rental agreement or police verification”.
“Necessary action has been initiated against the landlord. We are also working on gathering more evidence in the case against Chaurasiya,” Vyas added.
