A woman hailing from Uttar Pradesh and residing in Ahmedabad has filed a complaint with the UP Police that her in-laws and husband reportedly harassed her for dowry. A police team from Uttar Pradesh was in Ahmedabad on Tuesday for investigations and has arrested three members of her family.
The accused have been identified as — Shailendrasinh Chauhan,Hiramati and Shurajsinh Chuahan.
The victim,Pallavi Santoshi,is a native of Aligarh in UP. She was married to Shailendrasinh Chauhan in 2003,after which she shifted to Ahmedabad. Chauhan is the managing director of a security systems company in Ahmedabad.
Police said Pallavi was allegedly harassed and moved to Aligarh in July 2009. She lodged a complaint with the UP Police. After which,Pallavis family alleged that the UP Police were not taking any steps to investigate the case.
The family reportedly took help from a social worker in Ahmedabad — Vinu Zapadia — to take the case forward.
Zapadia said,Pallavi was reportedly harassed physically as well as mentally by her in-laws who demanded dowry from her family. She was getting battered and harassed by her mother in-law and husband. Her husbands family is quite well-off but they still pestered Pallavi to get money from her father.
The officials from Vastrapur Police assisted the UP Police while the investigation. Inspector B K Purohit said,The in-laws were harassing Pallavi from past couple of years. We have only helped them to arrest the accused who stay near Doordarshan Kendra in Vastrapur. The UP Police would further investigate the matter.
The police have registered a case of harassment under Section 498 (A) of the Indian Penal Code and also booked the accused under the Dowry Prohibition Act,1961.
