Unseasonal rain in Gujarat | Procurement of crops at MSP postponed: State government

According to the government’s primary estimate, more than 10 lakh hectare land has been affected by rain

With unseasonal rain in the state and many districts facing heavy rain, the state government has postponed the task of procurement of groundnut, moong, black beans and soyabean at Minimum Support Price (MSP). The agriculture department issued a circular on Friday to all district collectors informing them about the postponement of the process. Earlier, instructions were issued to start the procurement at MSP from November 1.

The circular was issued by the Director of Agriculture to district collectors who are also chairman of the District Level Committee for the procurement of agricultural produce at MSP under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).

“Currently, a situation of unseasonal rain has cropped up in various districts of the state. And many districts in the state have witnessed normal to heavy rain. Therefore, considering the current situation cropped up by rain in the state, the plan to start the process of procurement at MSP from November 1, 2025 has been postponed,” the circular said, adding that the new date to start the procurement process will be declared later.

A top source in the agriculture department said, “Considering the current situation, it is just not possible to do the procurement and therefore, it has been decided to postpone it for now. We have to be considerate to farmers who are facing a very difficult situation.”

The state government has ordered a survey to assess the damages caused by the agriculturists by the latest round of unseasonal rain. According to the government’s primary estimate, more than 10 lakh hectare land has been affected by rain.

The government has ordered a complete technological survey in a week’s time. It stated that a physical survey will also be carried out – if required – to ensure no farmer who has sustained losses is left out.

The government said it may consider giving additional financial assistance to farmers over and above the norms under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
