A woman and man were killed and 10 others injured on Monday when two private luxury buses collided on the NH-48 Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, near Lakhodr Patiya in Karjan, in Gujarat’s Vadodara district.
The impact of the collision was such that the Karjan fire department had to use hydraulic cutters to cut open the sides of the buses to retrieve the bodies of the deceased.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the day, when the two luxury buses were plying from Surat towards Saurashtra. The conductor of the bus that rammed into the one in front was killed while a female passenger of the impacted bus succumbed on the spot. Officials of Karjan Fire Department rushed to the spot to assist in rescue and relief work, even as the other injured passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital.
The accident caused a traffic jam for some time.
Karjan Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Vijay Madan told The Indian Express that an FIR had been lodged against the driver of the allegedly offending bus, who was absconding. “We have lodged the FIR and formed teams to nab him as he escaped after the accident, fearing public ire… We have tracked him down and will be proceeding with taking him into custody. Among the deceased was a woman, whose child was among the injured.”
