Two held for gang rape, robbery in Surat

Police sources said that the accused are friends and were doing petty jobs to earn money

Surat police have arrested two men after they allegedly gang-raped a woman and robbed her and her husband on Thursday, from different areas in Bhavnagar on Friday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Dinesh alias Chhoturam Yadav (24) and Nikunj Bhigradiya (25). Dinesh is a resident of Surat’s Punagam and hail from Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur, while Nikunj is a resident of Surat’s Kapodara and hail from Bhavnagar.

Surat Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 1, Alok Kumar Sharma, told The Indian Express, “We scanned the CCTV footage from the spot (victims’ apartment). We traced their movement and finally, through sources, we came to know that the accused had gone to Bhavnagar. We sent our teams to Bhavnagar and the accused were arrested from different locations.”

He further said, “The accused had left Surat and reached Bhavnagar separately. We have recovered the silver bracelet, which the accused had robbed the woman of. They had also robbed the couple of cash worth Rs 30,000, and Rs 5,000 has been recovered. They had used some money to buy clothes and used some to cover their travel expenses. Officials, along with the accused, are on their way to Surat.”

The accused had broken into the house of the couple in Surat early on Thursday. They held the husband at knife point, tied him and robbed the couple of cash and an Aadhaar card.

The accused then took the wife to the terrace of the building where they gang-raped her. They also took a silver bracelet, which the woman had put on. They threatened the victim not to raise an alarm and left the spot.

The couple approached the police, and lodged a complaint on Thursday afternoon.

A medical examination of the woman was also conducted on Thursday, the police also said. Police sources said that the accused are friends and were doing petty jobs to earn money.
