Twelve-year-old rape victim delivers baby girl at Porbandar Civil Hospital

Even as ‘unwanted’ girl children are often abandoned soon after their birth,a 12-year-old rape victim along with her newborn baby girl has been accepted by her family in Porbandar.

Even as ‘unwanted’ girl children are often abandoned soon after their birth,a 12-year-old rape victim along with her newborn baby girl has been accepted by her family in Porbandar.

The family, which resides in the slums behind Saurashtra Chemicals factory in Porbandar has decided to support the rape victim during her trying times.

The victim delivered the baby girl on Saturday.

The family is all set to take the young mother and the baby home as soon as they are discharged from the Porbandar Civil Hospital.

The family knows it will not be an easy task to look after a 12-year-old mother and her baby, especially so when the victim has lost her mother.

“Things will not be easy. But we want both our daughters to be happy,” said the girl’s father, who works as a labourer.

He added: “My daughter herself is still a kid. I know we need to take care of both of them.”

The girl reported labour pain on Friday night and was rushed to the civil hospital, where she delivered a baby girl on Saturday.

It was a normal delivery. The doctors have said the condition of both mother and the baby is normal.

The family did not come to know about the horrific experience the girl went through until she was found to be five-month pregnant.

In September, when the family came to know about the rape by two neighbours,a complaint was lodged and the two were arrested and lodged in jail.

According to the girl’s father his daughter was too frightened to tell him or her grandmother anything about the rape, for months.
