Trial in 2002 Naroda riots cases to begin soon

The prosecution,on Friday,opened the cases in the special court against the accused in the Naroda Patiya and Naroda Gam massacres reported from Ahmedabad during 2002 communal riots.

The prosecution,on Friday,opened the cases in the special court against the accused in the Naroda Patiya and Naroda Gam massacres reported from Ahmedabad during 2002 communal riots. Now,the trials in both the cases are expected to begin soon.

Special Public Prosecutor in Naroda Patiya case,Akhil Desai,said: “As per the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code,today we opened the case against the accused and informed the court of Special Judge Jyotsana Yagnik about the charges being faced by them.”

He said: “Of the 62 accused,we have completed the process of opening the case against 17. Once this process is over,the trial will begin with the court framing charges against them.”

In Naroda Gam case also a similar procedure was followed against all the 81 accused in the court of Special Judge S H Vora. Special Public Prosecutor Nigam Shukla said that the court is expected to frame the charges against these accused on September 30,which will mark the commencement of the trial.

BJP leader Maya Kodnani and former VHP general secretary Jaydeep Patel are among the accused in the two most gruesome cases of 2002 communal riots.
