Trial court visits Godhra carnage site

The Special Fast-Track Court that has been holding the trial of the 2002 Godhra Train Carnage case,on Sunday inspected the Godhra Railway Station and other places related to the crime that had left 58 people dead.

The Special Fast-Track Court that has been holding the trial of the 2002 Godhra Train Carnage case,on Sunday inspected the Godhra Railway Station and other places related to the crime that had left 58 people dead. The carnage was followed by large-scale communal riots across the state.

Trial judge P R Patel inspected the site for three hours in the morning. He was accompanied by Special Public Prosecutor J M Panchal,Assistant Special Public Prosecutor N N Prajapati,Investigating Officer J R Muthaliya and defence lawyers A D Shah,Yusuf Charkha,A A Hasan,I M Munshi,Javedkhan Pathan,L R Pathan and many others including security personnel.

During his three-hour visit,the trial judge visited the Godhra Railway Station,the stations of the railway police and the Railway Protection Force,the Railway Mail Service (RMS) office and Parcel office,’A’ Cabin and Poll No. 468/33 on the tracks near which the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express was torched. The court devoted a significant time to observe the situation from the railway station to ‘A’ Cabin and Poll No 468/33 where the main offence was committed.

After this,the court went to Ali Chawl,Ali Mosque,Ali Mosque Road and Signal Faliya Road— places near to the crime scene. The prosecution’s case alleges that a violent mob coming from Signal Faliya had attacked the train. After visiting Aman Guest House,where the inflammable material used in the attack was allegedly kept by the accused,the trial judge inspected the S-6 Coach.

The case is being tried inside the Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad. The court has visited the crime scene after recording all the evidence in the case. The court will hear the matter again after more statements of the accused are recorded. Before this,the Nanavati-Mehta and U C Banerjee commissions had visited the site.
