Bhesan town in Junagadh district remained shut on Monday,a day after Bhesan Taluka Panchayat BJP councillor Bhupat Bhayani was fired at allegedly by members of another community.
Bhayani is currently at a hospital in Rajkot with severe injuries on head but his condition was said to be stable.
Police have arrested three persons in connection with the incident. In his complaint,Bhayani has named eight persons. The police are yet to identify the other five suspects.
Besides,a case of rioting has been registered by the Junagadh police against a 300-strong mob that looted and set ablaze shops on Parab and Old Bus Station roads in Bhesan on Sunday following the attempt on Bhayanis life. Police have been deployed in large numbers to avoid any untoward incident.
Police said Bhayani was attacked near Mangnath Pipali village in Visavadar taluka while he was on his way back to Bhesan in his car on Sunday. Bhayani had reportedly gone to Visavadar to meet senior BJP leader L T Rajani.
The incident has revived the rivalry between the two communities that share a history of violence in Saurashtra for control over politics and properties.
