Torrent Power files appeal for tariff revision in 2010-11

Even as the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission had advised the state government to rationalise electricity duty two weeks ago,Torrent Power Ltd has filed an appeal to hike power tariff for 2010-11.

Even as the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) had advised the state government to rationalise electricity duty two weeks ago,Torrent Power Ltd (TPL) has filed an appeal to hike power tariff for 2010-11. The GERC is yet to pass an order on it. TPL has over 20 lakh consumers in Ahmedabad,Gandhinagar and Surat.

Two weeks ago,GERC had observed that electricity tariff in Gujarat is quite high as compared to other states. The observation was based on the hearing of consumer organisations and others on the high tariff electricity charges in the state.

Now,the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has threatened to protest,if the GERC allows an increase in tariff.

Ashok Punjabi,a local Congress leader, said: “We have called a meeting of the concerned citizens on this tomorrow. We will form a non-political group to fight against the price rise in the power sector.”

He added: “The power rates are the highest in Ahmedabad. They should not be increased any further.”

The GERC did not allow either the private players or the state power utility companies to increase tariff for the year 2009-10.

The GERC had directed the four distribution companies of the state — UGVCL,PGVCL,DGVCL and MGVCL — to improve services including the distribution of losses and rationalise the tariff.
